Rose dying back

Hello all,

I bought a new dwarf climbing rose this winter (Laura Ford) as a bare root rose. It's growing in a large pot on my balcony. Generally, I've been pretty pleased with the growth over the last couple of months, though it looks like it will take some time before the canes reach the support I have built.

My main concern is that while some of the new canes are doing well, some withered after emerging. This is happening to all the canes on the shady part of the plant, and I suspect it may be because they are now even more shaded by the new growth. Overall the plant gets less sun than I had expected (around six hours per day at present).

I'm attaching some pictures. One shows the general health of the plant, and the other shows the the withered canes at the back of the plant. Can anyone tell me whether I should be worried and what I could do to fix it?

Thanks!

Thanks Packlette. I did put some epsom salts in the soil when I planted, but could try some more.

And thanks Dave Morgan, that's a relief. I didn't want her to die in her first summer!

It's looking a lot healthier now, and no more has died off. The stronger parts are growing quite well, and there's even a flower bud. Should I cut the bud off to make the plant focus in building roots and canes?

    I wouldn't - I think it'll be fine - just enjoy the flowers image
