Did you plant these cannas, or did you move into a house and find them already there? Such a big clump sounds as if they haven't been dug up every year.
no only two years old somebody gave me a few shoots in a little pot they flowered lovely last year and this year there wasent even one flower although they grew around 3ft high they were shooting up really fast now there are about twenty big stems
If you dig them up you will have to shake the soil off the bulbs, separate them and then probably re-plant them into as many pots as it takes. The pots will need to be kept frost-free over winter and then started into growth in spring under glass.
Hi chica, when I lift my cannas I remove all the soil off them and split the roots so that I have 2 or 3 shoots on each section, that way they will be a more manageable size for repotting in feb into pots to get them started early in the greenhouse. Don't forget to cut off all the leaves down to about 3 inches, make sure they are dry and then store them in a cool frost free place.
Ive never allowed the leaves to die back down into the root but havent found any lack of vigour or flowers because of it
thank you so much for your advice.i havent got a greenhouse but i have a shed and lots of bubblewrap do i leave them in soil or just in a pot
It's easiest to put soil in the pot with them - not only do they get more protection, but it'll stop them drying out.
ok alina will do, will let you know how i get on
