leather jackets - artificial grass!

sianiosianio Posts: 2
I have recently had artificial grass laid in my north facing garden. They put crushed granite then a membrane, then sand before the grass (Lots of layers)!! I have been getting more and more leather jackets appearing up through the grass..... I never had them before so can only think the larvae were rolled up in the grass when the laid it. Can someone please recommend how I can get rid of them? I need a dog friendly solution! Thankyou image

    They are coming through from the soil.  Presumably the artificial grass came from a factory, not much chance of leather jackets there!  Unless it was second-hand.

    Yes a factory. Wow I'm surprised they can come up through all our those layers. Do you know how I can get rid of them?

    Birds will eat them - blackbirds and starlings love them.

    One thing's certain, the adults won't lay any more eggs in your lawn so this is the last time you'll be bothered with them.

    Surely that can't be right? If the leather jackets can come up through the membrane then so can everything else - weeds, slugs etc? Doesn't that lead you to think maybe they put the membrane in upside down, or that it isn't good enough to keep the weeds out for long?

    It seems leather jackets and chafer grub killer is longer available.... 'for domestic gardens' .... this phrase is now regularly 'trotted out'... for nearly all pests it seems... I've been down the nematode route for some time.... but its still not effective enough.....ts a dilellema .... "save the planet' or just 'get rid' without harming other species ... no answer yet it seems.... meanwhile the leatherjackets devour my lawn with or without nematodes.... :-{

  • A dear freind who had many remedies for gardening problems advised to put a jeyes fluid dilution on in autumn, not sure if this will make artificial grass a funny colour and pong a bit.
