Firsts for the year

Just returned from a slow walk round the garden.

glimpsed jet black fluffy cotton wool balls, think they must have been newly hatched moorhens.

Oh lovely AWB. They haven't nested on my pond for the last 2 or 3 years

Oh what bliss!  We had moorhens nesting on the pond and the moat at the farmhouse where I grew up - I used to love those black fluffy balls on stilts - haven't seen any really little ones for ages - jealous!!!

Maybe we should've dug a bigger pond image

We have had problems with mink but neighbour has been trapping them for the past few years, hopefully has got the better of them and the river life will return.

the moorhens nest on a pond I had dug 15 years ago, but saw them in an adjacent ditch, fed by natural spring.
