japanese maple needs help
I have a japanese maple which last year had little bits of fungus on the leaves which were still there when the leaves fell off. I checked the plant today and it looks like fungusy scaley things on the trunk. I have tried to check this and wonder if it is cottony maple scale. Has anybody else had this and if so how can i treat it. Thanks for any help received.

Maples are very prone to attacks by this little pest, which can suck the life out of the host. I've just sat for 3 days cleaning my maples because they had a heavy infestion. Cotton wool, marigolds and a bowl of water is what you need - wash all the branches down, top to toe. And be on the look out for further attacks during the season.
Thank you so much. To late to start tonight but i'll get going first thing in the morning rain or not
Alternatively, spray with Provado Ultimate Bug Spray, which will kill them and any hatching eggs that you've missed.
I've had similar issue and used Diatomaceous earth at the base of the tree for the past few years and now the tree is doing okay and actually has new growth.
