Clematis Alpina

Last night Monty described this as a great climber full of flowers. My 4ft high clematis has only 2 flowers and no buds. Shall I chop it right back or give it more time? I bought it last year so I guess it's a young plant. I haven't ever pruned it at all. Thank you.

..leave it grow and grow..it will get better... there's no need to prune these... snails and others will eat the flower buds... you need to watch for those but they flower profusely once established, so there should be plenty left for you...

Mine were planted in spring 2012 - this year they are absolutely covered with blooms - no pruning, just a sprinkling of Fish Blood & Bone in early spring - love them they're gorgeous.

I agree with Salino - leave it alone. It'll be doing all it's work below the surface and once it's got it's feet comfy it'll shoot up and flower like it's going out of fashion.

  • Great. Thank you. I will leave it and wait for it to get going.
