War theme

I am entering a garden in bloom comp this year and one category is themed on the world war. I intend to place 12 plastic troughs together and plant red white and blue plants to make the union jack flag. I only need low growing plants that grow very thick with plenty of flowers on so i can trim them to gain the sharp lines of the flag. Any ideas as to which plants i should be looking for?
