Help – how do I stop insects biting me?
While gardening I get covered in bites. I cover up as much as possible and spray on lots of repellent but that doesn't seem to deter the biters. What else can I do? It happens all year round, not just in summer. Foxes used to hang around in our garden, but this year have moved to a neighbouring garden. We also have buckets full of pebbles that sometimes have standing water in them – I don't know if either of those things are relevant. Thanks, Mark

Try eating marmite (other yeast extracts are available
). The smell is supposed to come through your skin. It used to work for a friend of mine.
Or garlic!
Buckets of standing water (and any other still water, even tiny amounts) will be housing hundreds and thousands of baby mosquitoes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Empty the water out!
And before going out into the garden in the late afternoon/evening, use Avon's Skin So Soft dry oil spray - don't worry, I know you're a chap but even the Royal Marines use it by the tank load to repel mozzies when on manoeuvres on the west coast of Scotland.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I've got a mozzie net so they don't bite me at night
In the sticks near Peterborough
Apparently avon skin so soft repels them but marmite as suggested by panda, it's the vitamin B12 that makes you smell funny to bity little buggers.
Mark Greaves...I have a similiar problem with bites from the garden. I get bitten by fleas as well!!. I never had this problem in my early years.. put these to my ??chemical imbalance. I've used Avon So Soft/ jungle repellent/ anti mosquito spray on my gardening clothes/ and today experimenting a drop of peppermint essential oil in coconut oil. All seemed to work. You may like to do a process of perference.
Mark,
I also use citronella incense stick in the greenhouse. This helps. Let me know how things progress.
Thanks for all the great advice. I've got rid of the buckets and ordered some Avon So Soft. I will keep you updated about progress!
Lavender oil rubbed on your wrists and behind your ears works for me
lavender scent or water and make sure you get rid of any stagnant water where they breed and some people use lemon and elderflower spray as I do when riding to avoid horse flies and they can bite.!
