Cap on soil

chickychicky Posts: 10,378

With all the rain this winter my soil has developed quite a hard cap.  I am about to mulch with FYM - do i need to break up the cap before I spread the mulch, or will the worms do it for me over time?  I have quite a heavy clay soil, and the garden is all on a gentle slope.

I would run one of the three pronged cultivators around and then mulch. If you don't have one, you could use a hand fork or even a hoe.

    Or a rake?

It depends on how much space is between your plants. Mine won't have any gaps until I pull out the forget me nots. If I learnt how   a hoe, I wouldn't have all the forget me nots or poppies, or all the overwintered cerinthe that are just starting to flower.
