Living walls

In my backyard I am surrounded by brick walls. Every year I try to soften and disguise, the not so pleasant sight with hanging baskets, planters etc etc. But, this year, I fancy taking a different approach to my problem. After doing some research online I came across the 'living wall' concept, which I think looks great.
My question is this ;-
I would like to create such a wall, however, I'm on a budget. 
What kind of easy to attach containers/holders ( which don't cost a fortune) could I use, to house plants, for a full season and beyond ? - I realise that some sort of framework would have to be built first, which is not a problem.
