Buying seeds online/eBay

in Talkback
I was just on ebay looking for a local lawnmower and stumbled upon the seed section, has anyone ordered seeds/plants online from ebay? And how have they fared? I'm looking at local sellers that I should be able to walk to and look at myself, if the seller is happy with that, I'm wary of ordering from abroad, though there's some roses from italy that look just lovely!

I started a thread the other day Sweet pea and had recommendations for Premier Seeds Direct via eBay. Ordered 8 packets, all at 99p and free P&P on Thursday evening and they arrived Monday. VERY impressed with the service and the price.
The only minor downside (if you are a newbie like me) is that the packs are plain and no instructions but I just googled them all and I'm sorted. Great value and great service too.
On the other hand, I ordered my Tumbling Toms from T&M on the same night, paid for delivery and still waiting for them!!!!
Have dealt with Seekay hort supplies many times, they are so cheap and reliable. All the seeds I bought this year are growing well, most seeds are priced 99p and postage is cheap as well.
I regularly buy plants on ebay , some great quality plants at very good prices, 99% of the plants I have received put the big suppliers to shame.
I collect Hemerocallis & most of my collection have come from ebay, varieties unavailable anywhere else.
Just avoid seeds from Chinese suppliers.
I purchased several gooseberries, a black, a white and a pink currents on ebay all excellent
But my best buy less than a fiver plus postage for three red current bushes I only wanted one but purchased the three and planted two gave one away these were great bare rooted plants all two to over three foot high and i would guess two year old plants had flowers with in a week (only a few) then berries.
This year my plants are all growing well.
I have also purchased seeds on Ebay and all the sellers have been amazing and I have got some really good non main stream items for less than mainstream items in the seed catalogues.
I purchased plants or seeds last year on Ebay from directplants, gardeningrussell and elfskins_edibles all of whom provided an excellent service and are still trading. Will not recommend suppliers that have only tried for the first time this year as do not know how seeds etc will fare once planted.
None of the seed or plant sellers are local to me everything came through the post and was packed well and healthy.
Hope this helps
I bought a few seeds online, i say they been hit and miss. Good price though, i bought some petunia candy something i cant remember, not 1 germinated. Tryed them multiple times now last season and this year. I dont think its anything i was doing seen as i got 82 petunias potted up already and two more pots what need pricking out. But i had some red lobelia they been very good and some pansys which abut 50% germinated but they look really nice now there out in flower
The good thing about ebay is that you can get unusual seeds at brilliant prices. I have bought lots and actually swapped a few on this website.
I would recommend british only suppliers as foreign ones put the seeds on a boat I think(it takes forever),and include pitiful instructions.
Have a go,most are buy it now. I have just bought some pennisetum seeds. Can't wait to plant them.
..this is negative..
last year I ordered 3 plants from same supplier... all very small and post and packing was quite expensive for what they were.. also one was not the plant advertised.. similar but a different variety.... I won't be bothering again...
Always check a sellers feedback before buying anything on ebay, you can get a good idea of what to expect from them.
Try seedsbypost.co.uk .... they delivered really fast to me, within 2 days and all seeds were great.
No probs at all from the eBay shop mike, the service was excellent and thank you for the recommendation
