Help with Alpines

Gemma WGemma W Posts: 3

I was thinking about planting some alpines into the brick holes of engineering bricks and was wondering which alpines would be best. Sempervivums would appear to grow well, does anyone else know of any alpines that would grow in very little soil? Thanks.

    Hi Gemma,

How are the engineering bricks arranged, are they on the ground or built into a wall? and are they cemented  or will they be draining through the base of the hole. Engineering bricks are very dense and sharp edged bricks but if you can get plants established that will soften the look

Hi, they will be loose bricks arranged on the ground and water will be able to drain through the holes. I have seen several old buildings with plants growing in the cracks of walls/bricks and I was hoping that once they get established they will spread and cover the edges of the bricks.

If the roots and water can get through to the ground any alpine will be OK.

Those old buildings will be make of less dense bricks than engineering and have lime mortar which is more plant friendly  than the cement we use now.

That's great thank you. I will give it a go and see how I get on
