Rhubarb

I have a number of rhubarb crowns in my garden and I have always understood that I shouldn't pull rhubarb from plants with less than 4 stalks.  For the last 2 years none of my plants have produced any more than 3 stalks at a time.

Is this an old wives tale and/or am I doing something wrong?

It sounds like your rhubarb is short of water and food, particularly water.

    Some detailed cultivation notes here:

  • hi - might be that if you have a lot of crowns that theyre overcrowding each other. they need a bit of room. also rhubarb loves a good feed - horse manure or similar on the bed in winter and a good mulch too when they re re growing - you might get few more stalks then. good luck image

  • Thanks - both of these are really helpful suggestions.  Thank you Alina for the link.
