Reusing clay soil to raise patio level?

Hi all,

We're digging out the clay soil in a problem area of our garden and to save ourselves from injury, thought it best to hire a small skip to put it in. We wonder now though, as we are laying a patio also, is is possible to reuse the clay to raise the levels of the patio at the end of the garden or is this not a good idea? We thought that as we would be putting hardcore on it anyway, it might not matter that it has clay underneath it...but we may be very wrong. Any suggestions as to whether this is acceptable or not? Thanks in advance.

  • I dont know about a patio but here where my garden is heavy clay ,houses have subsided when the clay dried out and I have a patio built by the last owner on clay and its not good.Admittedly I am on a hill but I think you might need a better shall we say base for the slabs to go on .image

I have clay soil and laid my patio on it. Use a thick layer of builder sand (3 inches) and that stops subsidence. I would level out the patio with the clay, level it and comact it down, remembering to allow for the sand and slab/stones. It is easier to level with sand remember.
