Conjoined Daffodils

TomskTomsk Posts: 204

I planted some daffodil bulbs last year, and one of them sprouted wit a strange globe instead of the usual head that appears in normal bulbs. It was like a damaged brussel sprout.

At first I thought it was a different kind of flower that had somehow got into the bag of daff bulbs I bought, but it's now starting to flower (or is trying, anyway), and it appears to be three or four fused daffodil heads on one stalk.

Is this particularly unusual, and should I be proud of it?

I've never seen anything like that. Take a photo and let us seeimage

Has it got one of those flattened looking stems that looks like more than one stuck together?

It sounds like fasciation. This happens when the growing point has been damaged at some point. It could be due to something as simple as an aphid biting it. Next year it will probably be normal. Last year I had it on a mullein and on linaria. I have a helleborus niger that has a very queer seed pod. I assume that it the same. I'll take a photo before it gets dark.

    It's not a mess, it's a nature reserve.

I had a closer look and took a quick photo. There's definitely four heads, though one of them is smaller than the others. In fact, two seem to be bigger and two seem to be smaller, generally.

If it's special, I'll take some more tomorrow:

Tomsk: Are you sure it's not a Terriffid, or perhaps a Daffodilorousaur??

Found this sometime last year - didn't know it was a common thing - looked cool though.

Brilliant,Thomas. If I can find the ones I had last year, I will post them later.

Well... Given that the bulb in question came from Lidl, it has left me wondering whether I should infer anything about their meat pies and cheap mince.

I'd advise anyone who eats their lasagnes to count how many heads are now on their own necks...
