Fungi on plum tree

I think this is a bracket fungi of some sort but have been unable to find out the exact species.

There are a few of them scattered on different branches on the tree. I have pruned the branches back but they appear woody and dead. What should I do now? Is it better to remove the fungi from the tree or can this do more harm than good. The tree is about 30 years old.

You need to remove the fungi for the tree to have any chance. Cut off the dead wood to just short of the trunk, sterilizing your cutters before you move to the next branch.

It's possible that the fungi are just in the dead wood - if they're throughout the tree, I'm afraid there's not much that you can do to help it.

  • Thank-you for your reply. I will do as you advise and keep my fingers crossed for the tree.
