Sooty mould

Does anybody have any experience or remedies for clearing sooty mould. I believe it can be washed off with soapy water. I also read that water and bicarbonate soda works but I am not sure. I was wondering if anybody has had it, and how they went about getting rid of it. It is on one of my customer's rhododendrons and pieris.
