I have just moved to an island just above orkney and durring june there is virtually no night will this affect any of my vegetables. such as runner beans or chillies

I would have thought it would have been beneficial-why not ask the neighbours how it works for them?
It wont harm plants. They don't need to rest like we do, they do because they have to.
I should have thought the extra light would have benefitted many plants - not sure about the almost permanent night in the winter though.
Agree with sotongeoff, chat with fellow gardeners in the area, most people love to share their experiences.
Hello Natures grafter, Im living in the Outer Hebrides and we get about 2hours of dark in the summer months. I've never noticed this to have any detremental effect on the veggies. Just think of the extra gardening hours to be had!!!

It helps!. Many commercial growers keep their lighting on up to 24 hours a day for tomatoes, chillis, cucumbers, bedding plants, foliage plants.
There are exceptional plants, such as poinsettias and chrysanthemums, where the amount of day / night has to be carefully controlled (periods of short days followed by periods of long days or vice versa - can't remember which).
I'm on the Island of sanday just north of orkney, I have tried talking to some of the people I have met but most don't have a poly-tunnel so because of the regular bouts of wind stick to growing potatoes leeks cabbage carrots cauliflower broccoli. I brought with me a 60 foot tunnel so am trying to grow as I did in birmingham but indoors and had a comment about my various beans not doing well due to the amount of light so am looking for advice
One or two indoor 'gardeners' in a town near to where I live have discovered the benefit of 24 hour light for growing a certain 'recreational' crop. Every window is 100% blacked out (to minimise lost light, of course). The police have been using helicopters and infrared sensors to detect properties giving out abnormal amounts of heat.
