Clematis Paniculata
A few weeks ago, Monty planted a Clematis Paniculata. He said it was evergreen and flowered early (May, I think) and sounded like it was just what I'm after. I assumed it was a Group 1 Clematis but a number of retailers on the web say it is Group 3 and flowers late. Who is correct, or are there two plants with the same name?!

It depends on its full name and variety. If you go to the clematis "bible" website - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemlistsearch.cfm and type in paniculata on the search, 6 clems are listed. Most, but not all, are group 1 pruning which means they don't get pruned unless you need to keep them within bounds or want to renew vigour from the base.

Many thanks. Crocus and a few others are selling a Group 3 Paniculata so I assume this must be one of the other ones listed. Guess I'll just have to be careful!
Monty said it was the New Zealand species, Clematis paniculata, in NZ it flowers in the spring.
True C. paniculata is a New Zealand plant which flowers in Spring and is in Group 1 for pruning. Half hardy and slow to establish.
The C. paniculata sold by these outlets is more likely to be C. terniflora which comes from the Far East and flowers in Autumn and is a Group 3 pruner.
