Green powder on supermarket tomatoes

TomskTomsk Posts: 204

When I buy normal, loose vine tomatoes in Lidl, they're covered in a fine green powder that comes off on your fingers if you pick enough of them up.

I assume this is a chemical that makes green tomatoes turn red in time for their appearance on the shelves, but what is it, and is it safe?

I usually wash all fruit & veg before I eat them, but I'm just curious about this powder.

  • Tomsk - This green powder occurs naturally and is given of by the tomato plants themselves and has not been added afterwards.....it occurs just the same with home-grown tomatoes.

It's a good idea to wash the fruit, although I don't think it represents any threat to health. It does stain quite badly, in the season my hand-towels usually get stained.
