What to plant under 2 small apple trees

Hello!  We inherited two smallish apple trees at the end of our allotment.  I would like to make use of the ground under the apple trees.  The soil is fairly dry.  I don't want to grow other fruits in that space.  Are there any herbs, or flowers that would tolerate the two apple trees.  Any ideas would be hugely appreciated!  Thanks

My apple trees are in the lawn and I plant daffodils and crocus under them.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Bluebells, hellebores, ophiopogon, dog tooth violets, hyacinth, scillas.

  • I planted a clematis at the bottom of my bramley seedling tree.
