Type of grass seed for sand

We live in the South of France where it is difficult to create a good lawn. Our garden has quite stoney soil and there are almost as many weeds as grass, although when freshly cut it does not look to bad. The ground is also very uneven and damaged the adjustment treads on my mower. I would like to spread sand over some areas to level out the ground and also lay seed in areas without grass [or weeds]
I have read that Bermuda grass or sand bluestem grass will grow in sand. Is this correct?

Many thanks for that Edd. I now have to see if either type of seed is available here in France.
