What's digging up lawn?

Every year something digs up parts of my lawn. I've always assumed squirrels, but Could it be something else? I have seen badgers ambling in to my neighbour's garden, and they could easily access mine. But is the damage too slight for a badger? There are other, smaller holes in the lawn also.

Sorry the last photo is blurred, but hopefully it shows the actual hole is about 3 and half inches wide.

Looks like a rat hole to me but I can't read that ruler, might be too small.

  • The holes in my lawn look very like that & they are rabbit latrines, so maybe that's what's your problem too, if you have wild rabbits nearby.  Sometimes I find rabbit droppings in & beside the holes, so maybe you will too if you take a really close look.  I've had badgers dig up the lawn in the past, but the mess they make is different in that they rip the turf up (looking for chafer grubs etc) rather than just making holes.

p.s. today I heard of a good way to stop badgers digging the lawn.  Apparently they don't do it if you've scattered some of that granular lawn fertiliser around.  I won't need to try this out, as my garden is now more-or-less badger-proof, but the person who gave me the advice has in fact tried it, and said it really does work.

  • I have holes that look like yours. Every morning I wake up I find one Large hole and about 5 small holes dotted around my garden. Last night I put an infra red wildlife camera in my garden. This morning I  can gone through my pictures and found out the coporate is a BADGER !

I don't know - in that rather natty grey suit Brock wears, he has quite a 'corporate' appearance image

No-one knows if you've done your housework, but everyone knows if you've done your gardening !
  • Could well be birds.. they like the chafer grubs that dwell beneath! Will literally peck the turf out like that.
