nerine bowdenii

Just bought myself some nerine bowdenii,in fact lots of,and was wondering how to get the best out of them. I have seen some flowering in gardens for a couple of months and I would love to recreate this.

What depth, soil conditions, position should they be planted in? I have seen some crowded with their necks out,but wouldn't this harm them as they are south African in origin?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

  • I've grown them for years Cotty100. I first planted maybe 3 or 6 I can't remember how many I bought at the time in various parts of the garden but they did'nt do well for me. About 4 or 5 years ago I moved them and planted them with their heads up above the soil at the edge of a sunny border. They have multiplied and this year I have over 20 of them. As autumn turns into winter and they bloom they look smashing even if by that stage the leaves are a bit scraggy. I cover the tops over during the worst of the winter to help protect them from frost. Hope this helps and good luck.

Yes keep the neck of the bulb exposed, I never cover mine & they are fine.
