rubber plant

I've a 6 ft rubber plant in a pot in my porch. It was getting too tall and I pinched the top out to encourage side shoots which it did. However the main stem has stared to wither and die from where I pinched it out. The rest of the plant below this is healthy and has side shoots but as the withering has moved down the stem the new side shoots have also died. From being 6ft the plant is now 4 ft. Can I stop the main stem from dying back.

  • In theory, it should only die back to the last node or set of leaves. You say its died back past buds and leaves and killed them too? Can you show us a decent picture of the plant where it had been pinched as well as the dead growth?

It doesn't sound very happy PW.  Is the porch too cold for it?  Perhaps you could bring it in the house and see if it improves.

There is good information on wikiHow on the internet which you could look through.  It may be pot bound or overwatered?

It's in a large clay pot and most of it is looking healthy. If it was over watered I'd be getting leaf drop. The upper stem is relatively new and as such green and soft compared to the lower stem and I wondered if that was why it was dying back and perhaps it would stop once it got to some harder older stem. I just wondered if anyone else had pinched out the top of a rubber plant and if they'd had the same thing happen. My porch(more like a conservatory) is relatively warm and has lots of other healthy plants in it
