Growing holly as a pot plant?
Hi everyone,
We live on a new estate and so our garden is literally a blank canvas when it comes to plants. I have a good few pots, but we want to do some work on the garden next year so I don't want to plant anything out.
Would love to grow holly - is it possible to grow this (or even establish it) in a pot or is it a plant that needs to be planted out straight away?

Holly should be fine in a container, it is a very tough plant. How tough? I pruned one in a wild part of my garden and just left the cut branches lying on the ground to keep cats away. A year later they had rooted!
I agree. Holly is fairly slow-growing, so ideal for a pot and has the benefit of being evergreen.
I use holly prunings to put in a tub of spring bulbs. It helps to deter the squirrels from digging the bulbs up, and the green leaves make the pot look more interesting until the shoots show.
we moved in in october and there is a lovely holly tree at the botoom of our garden its about 20ft tall. at the back of it was a laurel hedge at about the same height, this has all gone now but its left the back of the holly bare. will this eventually grow. and there are dozens infact hundreds of berries on the floor along with the same amount of sapplings will these grow if i pot some on?? or would it be best to leave them and let them get established 1st.i would love to make a hedge out of them all if i could get them established .

I have a holly tree in a pot. It was a seedling from a tree in dad's garden which he potted up for me. I have been growing it for ten years. Repotting is a painful process because it is so prickly. It is now about 4' tall and had it's first ever red berry this winter (just one).
I too have a holly in a large pot and its doing fine. Trying to prune it into a ball at the top, plenty of patience needed.
