Watering

I've just bought an electrically heated propagator to germinate some Strelitzia Reginae seeds.

I'm growing the seeds in vermiculite, which I've never used before, hence this post.

I'm very unsure as to how I should know when the vermiculite needs watering and the best method of watering; also how much water to add.

The propagator has matting in the base so should I water this and not the vermiculite?

Any advice/help would really help...
