I have a small rockery with a path down the centre leading to my compost bin,
for a long time now I have had small stone chippings moved from the soil onto
the path, I put them back and in a day or two they are back on the path again
in exactly the same place, could someone tell me how this is because it is driving
me nut's...??? Thank you for any help.

if its going to your compost bin it might be a small mammal heading for a feed, even may be cat or fox that's strolled over your border but it could be a thrush or blackbird looking for snails and worms, they do chuck things about in there search for food.
Thank you, I will look into those comments and let you now what I find,
but why should it be in ( exactly) the same place every time.
This'll sound odd but I've witnessed it with my own eyes.
My partners mother has a squirrel that lives around the garden who every morning carefully takes away a handful of slate chippings from under the apple tree. We're not sure where it takes them only that he must have a fair few of them now as the garden looks bare! The chunks he takes are big, much bigger than any nut he'd be mistaking them for.
I have a path made of finely chipped slate and worms often form the chippings into small mounds. Worms are capable of moving surprisingly "large" stone chippings. Carefully move the stones and you may find a tunnel underneath,if so ,I'd say earthworms.
Most likely culprit is blackbirds. They can chuck pretty large stones out of the way when they're searching for lunch.
Thank you Clarington they are not taken away they are lifted over the edging and placed in the same place every day or two.
I will take all comments on board and set up search lights and sirens,
I will catch the devil , no harm done just curious .. thank's all.
