Shrub identification please
Hi,
I'm in mourning for an unidentified plant. My neighbour had a lovely, large (roughly 3m) shrub, which blew over in the wind. Instead of staking it and firming it back in, they had it chopped up and taken away. It really was stunningly beautiful as it had lovely reddy purple foliage in mid January! There aren't many plants that can do that I'm attaching some pics in the hope that someone can tell me what it was, so I can plant one
I've taken the pic to 2 garden centres and had Photinia suggested (I'm not convinced as it was a lot more purple than my Photinia and just looked different) and perhaps wild viburnum. I've done an extensive internet search of viburnum and I can't find an evergreen or semi-evergreen variety that has the coloured foliage. The first pic was taken in Jan and the second in Dec last year. I believe it was just green in summer and have no idea about fruits or flowers as I didn't notice. We've only been here a year so I'm not familiar with the whole garden yet. Thanks in advance
Emma

I would have said Photinia, it's not a viburnum as the leaves are the wrong shape.
I should clarify I only had the first picture when I went to the garden centre, so not much to go on. I found the second one trawling through my photos this evening! Thanks landgirl
It's not Nandina domestica "plum passion" is it?

Or the Photinia as suggested

Hmm, notsure the leaves are right for Nandina.
Interesting that the shrub could be a Photinia as I have the one same shape as the one in the picture however this year it is looking very sad. Most of the leaves have dropped off and it has lost its lush red and green colour. It did have spots on the leaves last year. can I revive this now or is it too late? Hope you find out the name of your shrub.
Doesn't look like Photinia to me. That sounds a good suggestion Verd, the foliage changes colour from green to purple, which is what Emma said she noticed.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Doesn't Pittosporum have wavy-edged leaves?
Emma, are the pale edges to the leaves frost, or variegation? There is a variegated Photinia called Pink Marble which looks more purply from a distance. I've just brought in a sprig of my Photinia and the leaves look very similar, as does the habit - but I could be barking up the wrong tree!
The shape and number of the leaves made me think of a Cornus. Any evergreen ones?
My vote is for photinia
