Removing stubborn ferns from rockery

I am struggling to remove some really large ferns from our rockery. I have managed to dig out the more exposed ones, but the remaining blighters are really rooted in hard to reach places, between the rockery walls and such. I would love to get them out as they are growing up between other plants and generally taking over the place.
Your advice would be most welcome, thanks

I would cut off all the crowns and use a weeding tool to remove out of reach ones. Ferns do not come back when the crown is removed.
