Badly behaved cut flowers

I have a shrub of Ribes sanguineum. Twice in three years I have cut a few stems to bring indoors. Each time I cut the stems before they broke bud. I set them in a vase of water in a bright cool room. Both times, the buds have opened to reveal white flowers. The shrub is an old one, possibly forty years old or more and its flowers are standard pink. I have no complaints as the white cut flowers are lovely but does anyone have any ideas as to how this change came about?

No idea why that would happen, just wanted to ask if they smelled as bad in the house as they do in the garden. Or is it just me that thinks the flowers smell of cat pee?

As I started to read your post Shirley, I got to a point and thought " I bet they opened pale". I've heard of this before , no idea why, maybe the extra heat forcing them before the colour has formed in the buds?? I don't know. I'm with landgirl though, I don't like the smell.
It smells OK in the garden, it's when you bring it in the house it smells of cat pee!!
Dear Hostafan, they did indeed open pale, some pure white, some with a tiny tinge of pink. Regarding the smell, it;s one of the reasons Icut them. I love it - I often think it's a bit like parmesan or basil. When you know what it is, it smells good but if not, you think you are smelling something yuch.
