hydraneas leaves and stems eaten

i planted out hydraneas last year and something ate all the leaves and stems in a week,hardly nothing left of plant,i taught it was dead,now new green leaves coming up,how can i prevent the same thing happening or what is it?thanks

Have you got rabbits getting in your garden? Cant think of anything else that would eat the whole plant. Try surrounding it with chicken wire.
