? Why do we have to start seeds off in a seed tray and then gradually transfer to say 4 then 10 inch pots

? What happens if we sow say tome straight into there last pots...10 inchers

    Because the fast growing seedlings quickly absorb the nutrients in the compost and grow better when potted on. Also they may not all germinate which may waste all that compost you've put into a big pot.

    And there is a danger that the compost which is not in use by the plants roots becomes waterlogged.

  • Agree with all above plus we usually plant young tomatoes so that some of the stem is buried.  Extra roots grow from those first few inches of stem which helps to produce a larger, stronger plant.

    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
