Dwarf Tulips in Pots

Hi All

I noticed that my dwarf tulips in pots on the patio have started to show. Should I give them a feed or wait for a bit.

What plant food do I use when the time is right? I have some general plant food and tomato feed left over from the summer. Look forward to your replies.

  • They're a bit advanced due to the mild temperatures we've had so far this winter but will slow down when it gets colder.  Bulbs contain everything they need to flower and you don't need to feed them until after they have flowered.  Doing that builds the bulb up for next year and either of your feeds will be fine.  If you don't plan to keep the bulbs (many treat tulips as annuals these days) then you wouldn't bother to feed them at all.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Maybe it's time to plant those tulips that are hanging in bags in the shed.

  • I'm trying a new variety this/next year, 'Shogun'   'Little Beauty' and 'Sparaxis-Harlequin Flower' from Unwins

Its a bit early to plant sparaxis. they are summer flowerers. If you've already planted them in pots ,make sure they are frost free.

  • thanks for that fidget, I wish Unwins had mentioned that! Oh well, there in now so here's hoping.
