cobnut / hazelnut maintenance

I have two of these cobnuts either side of our entrance to our woody area.  Should I be thinning any of these branches out ?

We coppice ours from time to time but it does mean a few nutless years. I don't think we'd do them all in one year again

If you can get at the base you could remove the older stems, I can see one in each, right to the base.

They take any amount of hacking about without complaint

  • I agree with Nut - you could remove a few of the older stems right at the base.

Very interesting info here on coppicing hazel, although the aim is more to provide timber for hazel fencing etc rather than nuts.$FILE/FCIN056.pdf

  • depends what you want, I prune mine but know it benefits from being pollarding .You can get some good hazel been sticks by doing this but I like the nuts and so prune it to shape or size I want.image
