Any reasonable garden soil will produce a good crop of strawberries-you don't need to worry about straw until the fruit forms in the summer-you will need to take precautions to guard from slugs- they will have the fruit before you do.
As for Pauline's leaves the jury still seems to be out
Could it be caterpillars eating the leaves, I've had a mega problem with them all summer. At first I thought it was slugs and snails eating everything but I've literally had hundreds of caterpillars eating anything they can find. They are skillful at hiding too and stick to plants like super glue when jet sprayed with water.
