When I went out to my dalek composter today to put in some kitchen waste there were zillions of brambling (not sure if that is the correct spelling) worms clustered at the top round the lid. I removed them back down to the compost and wondered why they were trying to escape and if anyone else has worms like mine.

hi,i breed worms for fishing as well as for composting,usually the worms come out of the compost if it gets to hot,try turning it with a fork every four weeks or so to allow it to cool a little,the name is brandling but if very red they are most likely dendrobaena.ps dont put fruit skins like orange peel in it or it will alter the ph and kill them,hope that helps,tom.
Thanks Tom. I have been putting satsuma peel in the last week - perhaps that is upsetting them so I will put the peel in the green recycling wheelie bin instead. I thought I had the wrong spelling for brandling so thanks for letting me know.
I have heard that you must not put citrus waste into a wormery which has brandling or tiger worms (they are striped). I don't think that a small amount of citrus peel would affect the red worms commonly found in compost bins, I frequently put citrus in mine. Sometimes as Tom says, they can get too hot, or perhaps they are breeding; who knows. From time to time a few of mine also make a bid for freedom. A compost bin, unlike a wormery has many, many different small creatures helping the compost process.
Artjak - after Tom mentioned the citrus I have been looking up details and as long as I don't put too much in and chop it up fine the compost worms will be OK. Not one worm around the lid today so maybe they were out for an afternoon jaunt.
I bought some bagged horse manure some weeks ago and when I went to use it yesterday I found lots of 2 inch bright red worms clustered ay the top of the bags on the outside but sheltereing
Spread them onto the beds so they can sort out my soil
NewBoy - what on earth were you doing sorting manure and worms out on Christmas day - were you trying to escape the washing up?
No between marriages and son moved out in March so I was bored.......no fancy reasons......As all we boys know there is nothing better than getting yourself dirty !!

To be honest I would rather have been out getting " dirt under the fingernails".
