Closeness of two shrubs
Greetings all. I have two shrubs; Gaultheria mucronata "red", and Cornus Baton rouge. I was thinking of putting the cornus behind the Gaultheria but two things stop me. I have a 4ft width patch of soil thats 2ft depth, and secondly thinking the sizes they grow might conflict with one another.
According to the labels on the pot the cornus grows 3ft 11 inches high and approx 5ft wide (the extra foot width wise isn't a problem), and the Gaultheria grows 2ft 6 inches high and 4ft width (its about halfway I'd say in the pot atm)
Hope to hear replies soon

if one is 5' and one is 4' wide that's a total of 9feet. Have you got 9 feet corner to corner?

They wont be side by side. The cornus will be behind the other one.
I'm probably misunderstanding how much space you have. I picture a bed 2 foot deep with 2 shrubs within that 2 foot, one behind the other

Sounds to me as if either shrub would more than fill the space available on its own, eventually. I think the Gaultheria would need a partner of the opposite sex, if you want berries.
Oh, sorry Nutcutlet! I didn't mean 2 foot deep, I ment 2 foot width and 4 foot length. My bad for that.
@landgirl What is that true? I brought mine from the garden centre (with berries on) having no thought to that. Does this mean I need to get another or no berries next year? How on earth do you even know the sex of these? @_@
If it has berries it must be female. You would need a male plant to pollinate it next year. Gaultheria are normally dioecious (single sex).
I see.. First off how do I buy the male plant? Is it called anything different? Know any sites that sell it? Secondly, they have to be next to each other right?
I will put the Gaultheria in that spot alone then

In this article at least one male cultivar is mentioned by name.

Male plants are often just called, for example, G. mucronata male, or mascular is sometimes used. Several nurseries offer them.
Thank you! I already found one place that sells them online. I think my initial plan is to have the male in the front garden and pollinate the female with a brush filled with pollen from the male.
