gunky potatoes

Hi ,

last year my three year old son and myself attempted to grow potatoes.  It was far from a sucess. They ended up all mushy and gunky. 

I dug them all up and turned the soil. I filled it with home grown compost and covered it down for the winter. 

Can i use that area again for other veggies or is there anything that i have to do first?  I have looked in a few books but i can't find an answer any where.  Can any one tell me what to do??
