Is it possible to use old potting compost for growing carrots and salad crops? Would it be o.k. to add fish blood and bone to it as a fertilizer?

    I have heard that you are meant to throw it away as it has lost it's nutrients and may contain fungal diseases. However, I dig it in to my vegetable garden, along with manure, to help lighten the heavy soil and after years of this my vegetable garden is now much easier to work. Fish blood and bone is good stuff anyway.

    I just wondered if I could reuse it in containers, perhaps put it in the bottom half and add fresh compost on top.

    Well I do reuse some at the very bottom of big containers that are being replanted temporarily, not for permanent planting. However I always tip it out onto the slabs first in case any vine weevil grubs lurking in there.

    I also use it as a mulch around the garden/ & new plants & add it to the compost heap, after have turned it. so it doesnt get wasted. J.
