Talkback: Vinca or periwinkle

Yes, in the wrong place, it's a nightmare. But it's invaluable in one part of my garden - a north-facing 'bed' under two conifers - where nothing else will grow!

  • How can I get rid of violets? I let a few grow because my wife likes the colours and now they are everywhere. The roots seem easy to pull out but days later, they're back again.

I have been told, and it seems to work, that when trying to get rid of violets, you should rough up the leaves a little and then use an herbicide. They have a protective cover on the leaves. My current problems are rampant vinca that has crept in from a neighbor, and Canada thistle. Ugh!
