Torbay Palm

Like many others across the UK we have a 10ft Torbay Palm which unfortunately 'died' last winter after being relentlessly battered by the cold for two years.  Having left the trunk in place and patiently waited, we now have several new palms growing around the base.  The problem is, I'd earmarked that part of the garden for another project since the loss of the original plant.  What I need to know is can these new plants be successfully split from the parent, and if so, how easy (or difficult) is it?  It may be that the new project is shelved, as we did love the original!
