Can I use wood ash directly onto the garden, or must I compost it first?

i put it in the compost . my dad and his . used to put it in the  with the seed potatoes come easter . good for the skins  lad

Wood ash is a great source of potash which aids flowering a d fruit production. the spuds love a bit of it.

I sprinkle it around the fruit trees.

thanks. will it affect my alkaline soil?  I don't want to cause problems.
