pleached trees

Is is possible to create a pleached tree "avenue" with miniature trees or standard shrubs?  We don't have the space for a full size avenue but have a path which I think would look great with these rather than a pergola.  If possible, any suggestions for plants.  The maximum ideal height 7ft.

The Hornbeam tree grows upright and compact, although to achieve a neat avenue effect you will need to be able to walk all the way round the trees to prune them into the height and shape required, very much like the trees that line the Champs Elysée in Paris. Of course, pruning will also keep a check on the size you want to achieve.
