Poinsettia SOS

Hi, bought a poinsettia last week, it is on a table in the sitting room. I noticed it was dry last night, Sat 16th and the label said keep moist. I have given it some water, but I have noticed some of the leaves going yellow and failling off. HELP!

Hi marklikesbees - remove the yellow leaves and water as soon as the top of the compost is dry.  More information here http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=146 - it may be that yours isn't getting enough light if it's on a table in the middle of the room.  Can you put it nearer a window (but not close to a radiator and not in strong sunlight - if there is any).

  • Thanks for that Dovefromabove, I will act accordenly. Thanks for the use RHS site link tooimage

I water mine in a saucer under the plant, I keep the level topped up. Plant's lived for 4 years now. image

  • Thanks Emma, another good tip noted. How do you look after yours after the flowering season?

i just keep them in a bright place, out of direct sunlight.

  • Thanks Emma, do you cut it back or anything like that?

  • Hi marklikesbees,

I read somewhere that you shouldn't buy them if they have been standing outside and even the trip to the car from a shop can be enough to kill them if they are not protected.

It seems to be tricky to get them to form the red bracts for next year. I believe they have to have 12hours light and dark and that's achieved by putting them in a dark cupboard overnight. I'd never remember to do that.

    Hope yours survives  okay.

  • Oh Dear, not looking good. If it make it to Christmas Day, I'll be happy.

If it drops anymore green leaves, I'll have to call it Kojakimage It has just reminded me why I do not keep houseplantsimage

I'm afraid that some of them have not been treated that well before we buy them, and all the tlc in the world will not undo the harm that's already been done image

  • I know, its quite sad the way you see DIY stores treat they plants. I was looking at a stores Venus Fly Traps the other day, they were almost dead and they still wanted £4 for them.
