Xmas bulbs

Hi

Bought some paperwhite bulbs (a pk of 50) to plant up as Xmas pressies for my female relatives.

These were received through the post today. I have just opened the bag and most of the bulbs have already started to sprout. All of the shoots are curled over about 90 degrees or so, nonw of the bulbs have any roots.

Can anyone tell me how can I get these shoots to straighten out? If I plant them over the next couple of days will they grow straight or will they always have a bend in them?

Help.

  • Don't worry, Kiwijo, they'll know which way is up once they are planted. Any kinks in the stem will be hidden under the compost.  Get them in as soon as possible is my advice.

Thanks Bob, I guess Im a bit concerned as the shoots are about 2-3 inches long and as Im planting them in indoor pots I didnt think Id be planting them that deep.

Still, will give it a go and cross my fingers.

  • As they're that long I'd suggest planting the bulb at an angle - bulbs don't need to be upright (in fact, it's recommended to plant some bulbs which have hollow shaped tops on their side.) image

I bought those paper whites last year and both me and my daughter had to put them outside, we think they smell absolutely awful, there was a whole thead on these last year and whilst some people liked them, most didnt.
