Wintering Agapanthus

I was given a magnificent Agapanthus (no lable attached) for my birthday in August. The flower heads are as big as my own head and it was glorious over the last couple of months. It is in a plastic pot - quite a large plant....it's starting to die down now, I've raised it off the ground but cannot imagine it is hardy as the leaves are quite wide....what's the best to do with it? Do I cover it and trust leaving it out side or put it in the shed in the dark? I have no greenhouse.....Help please??

It would be better in the ground than a pot. Add in lots of grit to make the soil very free draining and site it in as full sun as possible. As it is dying down it sounds deciduous which should mean that it is more hardy than the evergreen ones. If we get prolonged freezes then a mulch of bark is all that is needed, removing the mulch in early spring.
Sounds as if it is unlikely to be fully hardy. If in a pot put it under cover somewhere, leaves will die back, don't water but keep just a little moist and then bring it back outside in the Spring when it shows signs of growth, always being ready to whip it back under cover if late frosts threaten.
Like this spring! Mine got zapped by March's late hard frost but are on the mend now.
Late frosts are the worst because the plants have very soft growth to be damaged. Early frosts have to attack gnarled and old stems from the previous year which might survive. A hard frost in late April or May is disaaaaastrous.
