flowering bergenia

Hi

Quite new to gardening and new to this forum - can anyone help please? my bergenia (elephant ear) is in flower now - probably better than in summer! should I do anything with it when the flowers die off or just leave it and hope for the best?

  • Yes, bergenias are a welcome sight at this time of year, aren't they?  Especially when there isn't much else in flower, so plant more or split yours if poss. when finished flowering and increase your plants for next winter!!  Good luck.

You could just cut away the dead flowers to tidy it up.  I am hardly ever without flowers on my bergenia and my flower arranging friends find the leaves very useful.

  • Thank you - I thought they only flowered later in the year - learning something new all the time - they really do brighten up a shady area and look good behind my red dogwood. Haven't tried splitting plants yet......
