Hello All, I was just watching beechgrove on iplayer and they had a rediculously good yield of cucumbers this year. It was my first year of growing them (and of growing anything) and I only got 4 from 2 plants.
I grew them on the shady side of the greenhouse (one in the ground and one in a large pot) do you think if I grow them in full sun next year it will make a big difference? Any advise welcome?
They did taste great though, that's why I want to give them a better spot next year
The varieties where Vega (3 cucs) and crystal apple (only 1), second one says it's need both male and female flowers for pollination, Vega is all female.

Full sun will make a big difference, Mandy.
As Italophile says you will need sun. I am no expert, but have grown cucumbers in my allotment for the last three years and have had amazing crops. They do get a lot of sun in the allotment so that must be the answer - they also need lots of water.
In my experience, cukes are up there with pumpkins in terms of sun requirements.
Thanks that's what i wanted to hear, I'm moving the whole greenhouse a few more feet away from a north facing fence so hopefully that will bring all of it into full sun in the summer and I'll pay more attention to watering and soil prep.

I grow my cucumbers in a separate GH to tomatoes. I shade them from direct sun but keep it very warm & humid, like a sauna at times, soaking the floor often each day, it's the one thing I can grow with good results each year, lunch box or full size ones I have loads. Works well for me.
So cucumbers like the suana and Tomatoes like the desert - and I don't know what I love more tomatoes or cucumbers
Hi Mandy - as promised - the one I grew outdoors this year was marketmore 76 which I puchased from Wilko (Wilkinsons). These are outdoors ones but as I said previously had an incredibly high yeild. I don't know if they would be any good in a greenhouse but you are bound to find something, so just experiment. As folks have said, cucumbers like a sunny spot and water. I grew outdoor ones in the cold horrible summer of 2012 and still had a brilliant crop of cucumbers, so don't give up.
That's great I will grow Marketmore 76 outside next to a south facing wall then and the tomatoes and chillis can have the greenhouse. and I'll make sure I water regularly even if it has to be when I get home from work in the dark.. I'm not a morning person.
