'To everything, there is a season' be patient and things will grow in their own time, in the spring and summer growing seasons, there are a lot of products on the market to feed your plants, read the labels and buy what is suitable for what you want to grow.

You dont want your bonsai to grow too fast, do you?

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Not sure you can really speed up the growing process without some compromise.  Arguably it is better to give them the ideal growing conditions to maximise the potential?  Good root space and areation, light and feed should do the trick

If you want to grow a bonsai on quicker put it back in the ground but keep it in shape. Putting something flat under the root ball will prevent the tap root from developing again and make a nice root spread.  Artifical light can keep tomatoes growing longer per 24hrs rather than faster

If there is, the commercial growers will have found it.

There are three things needed for plant growth (besides water and nutrients): warmth, carbon dioxide and sunlight, the latter two being needed for the photosynthesis that generates the energy the plant needs to grow. Commercial growers control this by increasing the intensitt of light and keep the lights on for 24 hours a day, and by injecting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere inside their glasshouses, and by carefully controlling temperature. There is a limit to the amount of warmth or sunlight a plant can take before its leaves start to scorch or wither.

We amateurs do what we can with warmth and sunlight and by feeding and potting on etc., but we can't provide light 24 hours a day, or inject carbon dioxide, or provide continuous temperatures of around 25 C

  • Re what goldilocks says, if you burn a paraffin heater and use artificial lights inside a greenhouse, you might speed things up a bit but I'm at a loss to know why you'd want to.

The joy of gardening is surely in watching the seasons go past each with its own delights - be it flowers, fruits or veggies.   You can encourage plants to grow exceptionally well by giving them ideal situations, light, warmth and food, but not to get them to outrun their assigned time and space - thank goodness nature just gets on with it all in spite of what we can do.

Of course, people who grow things for big shows like Chelsea do hold back thier plants with cold rooms, or bring them on to flower out of season with bright daylight bulbs, extra heat and so on, but for most of us that is beyond our purses or our desires.   Enjoy watching things your garden develop, sigh when it goes wrong and remember that next year will alwys be the perfect year for absolutely everything you want to gow.

  • there are many types of circumstance in which plants can be given the ideal conditions artificial lighting can be a big pluss for example lighting that has a 6500k spectrum will be more beneficiual to plants these are little tweaks which work but i doubt in the long term time saving and the effiecncy will be worthwhile coupled  with the extra expense
